<-- back Phyllis Baldino A selection of single-channel videos by the Brooklyn-based artist Phyllis Baldino will be presented in RAUM 3 in Mitte from Thursday, June 2 - Sunday, June 5. The program will be launched with an artist's talk on Wednesday, June 1 at 6 pm. Trained as a sculptor, Baldino's early video work involved the construction and disassembly of ordinary household objects in order to describe the mutable space, or "grey area," between what constitutes, or doesn't constitute, an object. She explores the intangible boundaries between the material and metaphysical world by mounting large-scale video installations, which address such topics as perception, memory, and other scientific phenomenon. Her recent work represents a continuation of these concepts, but are more abstract in nature. The program this week will include a selection of videos from the Grey Area Series, in addition to five large-scale projections of "about symmetry symmetry about" (2002), "ParaUniVersesVersesVerses" (2003), "mi-missing-GR-brain" (2002), among others. The exhibition is part of IN ABSENTIA, an ongoing summer series of film and video events, curated by Alena Williams for RAUM 3. Baldino received her BFA in Sculpture from Hartford Art School, West Hartford, Connecticut. Her work has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art, SoHo Guggenheim, Whitney Museum of American Art, Wexner Center for the Arts, Contemporary Art Center (Cincinnati), and The Thing (New York) and in numerous national and international film and video festivals, including the Impakt Festival (2002, 2001, 1999), the New York Video Festival (2002), the Oberhausen Short Film Festival (2001), media_city seoul 2000, and the World Wide Video Festival (2000, 1998, 1996). In 2001 and 1996, she was a finalist for an international media / art award at the ZKM / Sudwestrundfunk and International Video Arts Award (respectively) in Baden-Baden. Her work will be included in "Hunch," an upcoming exhibition at the Artists Space, New York, curated by Amy Sillman at Artists Space.
