the river suzhou that flows through shanghai is a reservoir of filth, chaos, and
poverty, but as well a meeting place for memories and secrets. ye lou, who spent
his youth on the banks of the suzhou, shows the river as a chinese styx in which
forgotten stories and mysteries come together. his film "suzhou river" is by far
the strangest remake and most appropriate transformation that alfred hitchcock's
"vertigo" has ever been subject to. this is not just a tale about a mermaid, and
her double, but also a story about two cities that share the same space, but not
the same time. and if it is "vertigo", we already know how it ends. or don't we?
